Type of Instruction Provided

Multi-Sensory Instruction

The International Dyslexia Association recommends multi-sensory teaching (a method of instruction that utilizes auditory, visual, and tactile senses) to teach reading to someone who has dyslexia or other learning and attention issues often referred to as an Orton-Gillingham (OG) based method of reading instruction.

Tutoring is provided by a Certified Reading Specialist  utilizing the Barton Reading and Spelling System.*

What Is Taught?

  • Phonemic Awareness
  • Sound Syllable Association
  • Syllable Instruction
  • Morphology
  • Syntax
  • Semantics

How Is It Taught?

  • Multi-sensory (using visual, auditory, and tactile senses)
  • Systematic and Cumulative
  • One-On-One Direct Instruction
  • Diagnostic Teaching
  • Part to Whole and Whole to Part

Remote Tutoring Requirements

  • reliable internet access 
  • computer
  • web camera (often built-in to computer)
  • mouse is recommended
  • noise cancelling headset with microphone is recommended
  • lined wipe erase board
  • expo marker (red and black/blue)



*The Barton Reading & Spelling System is an Orton-Gillingham based method of instruction.  A student should be tutored for an average of 45 minutes per session at a minimum of twice a week to be effective.
